Nobilo 2011 Icon Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough

Nov 20 2012 vino 005

If there is one place you can get bang (or maybe zing) for your buck, it is the Marlborough region of New Zealand. For $10 or less you can bag a completely satisfying Sauvignon Blanc.

In recent months my mantra has been to focus on fewer bottles of wine, but of higher quality. With this in mind I reached for the top shelf at the wine shop and grabbed the 2011 Nobilo Icon Sauvignon Blanc, which is a step up from the economy Sauv Blancs from New Zealand.

One whiff signals the trademark citrus zest of the New Zealand style. Upon sipping, splashing lemon and grassy flavor notes are pronounced. There also is a crackling acidity, which makes you smack your lips and pour another glass.

The Icon label uses specially selected Sauvignon Blanc grapes from top vineyard blocks in several Marlborough subregions, each contributing its own nuances. The blocks are cold fermented separately using a variety of yeasts to culminate in a symphony of flavor.

I paid $19 for this bottle and it’s a nice value. This is a rich, full bodied wine that pairs naturally with seafood.
